Chablais UNESCO Global Geopark

UNESCO Global Geopark, inscribed 2015, in France. Modern history in the Chablais dates to the 19th century during the industrial era with the large-scale quarrying of gypsum, slate and building stone in the towns of Armoy, Morzine and Meillerie. From the late 19th century, until the beginning of World War I, the Lake Geneva Riviera was one of the most frequented European destinations by high society. A distinctive Art Nouveau architectural identity was established and lakefront promenades, grand gardens, thermal spa buildings, hotels, theatres and casinos were built. From the 1950s, winter sports tourism became very well established and numerous famous ski resorts such as Chatel, Morzine-Avoriaz and Les Gets are now the annual destinations for millions of visitors.
