North Pennines AONB UNESCO Global Geopark

UNESCO Global Geopark, inscribed 2015, in United Kingdom. A sanctuary for breeding wading birds, the geopark is the most important area in the English uplands for these iconic species. The North Pennines contains 27% of England’s blanket bog—an essential carbon store that plays a key role in capturing and storing carbon dioxide. The Pennine Way National Trail, a 435 km long-distance walking route, passes through the geopark from the northwest to the south.
