Pendjari Biosphere Reserve
1986UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 1986, in Benin. Located in north-western Benin, the Pendjari Biosphere Reserve lies at the interface of the Sahel and Sudanian zones, offering a unique ecological corridor between West Africa’s drylands and its more humid regions. The reserve encompasses a largely flat peneplain, interspersed with riverine flood zones and low mountain chains. It plays a vital role in conserving the region’s landscapes, species, and genetic resources, while supporting ecological resilience and local livelihoods through sustainable resource use.
