Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve
1998UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 1998, in South Africa. Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve was the first South African biosphere reserve and is situated in the Western Cape Province about 40 km from Cape Town. It covers 103,629 ha, of which more than 80 per cent is mountainous landscape that ranges from high mountain peaks and deep valleys to gentle hills and lower mountain slopes. The remaining area consists of a gently rolling coastal plain and a marine area of about 24,500 ha, with a mostly rocky coastline and sandy beaches and estuaries.
