Songor Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2011, in Ghana. Songor Biosphere Reserve lies on Ghana’s south-eastern coast at the mouth of the Lower Volta, where the river meets the Gulf of Guinea. A shallow, brackish lagoon sits at its centre, linked by creeks to low islands and the estuary. This river–lagoon–sea setting supports large numbers of migratory waterbirds on the East Atlantic flyway and important nesting beaches for marine turtles. The reserve aims to conserve habitats and species; integrate wildlife management with local use; and develop education, research, tourism and recreation across its conservation, development and logistic functions.
