Korup Rainforest Biosphere Reserve
2023UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2023, in Cameroon. Korup Rainforest Biosphere Reserve lies in Cameroon’s south-west region within the Guineo-Congolian zone, and is ecologically linked to Nigeria’s Cross River National Park. It is one of Africa’s oldest rainforests, over 60 million years old, recognised as a Pleistocene refugium, conserving exceptional biodiversity and maintaining wildlife corridors and genetic diversity. The reserve’s objectives are to support sustainable, low-carbon livelihoods and evidence-based management, conserve forest cover, tackle poaching and illegal trade, protect flagship species, and serve as a hub for research, monitoring and education.
