Isla de Bioko Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2025, in Equatorial Guinea. The Bioko Island Biosphere Reserve is a highly diverse and ecologically significant area, encompassing lowland Guineo-Congolese rainforests, high-altitude Afro-montane forests, and rich endemic fauna, including endangered primates as well as distinctive birds and other mammals. Its vegetation is shaped by altitude, climate, and historical human activity. The Biosphere Reserve fulfills three core functions by combining: conservation, protecting species and habitats within the Luba Caldera Scientific Reserve and Pico Basilé National Park; sustainable development, promoting equitable economic growth, poverty reduction, cultural preservation, and ecotourism in Malabo, Luba, and surrounding communities; and logistical support, facilitating research, monitoring, education, and training through the National Institute of Forest Development and Management (INDEFOR) and the MAB National Committee. This integrated approach ensures the protection of biodiversity while fostering socio-economic resilience and environmental stewardship across the island.
