Quiçama Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2025, in Angola. The Quiçama Biosphere Reserve spans across the provinces of Luanda, Icolo e Bengo, and Cuanza-Sul, covering municipalities such as Quiçama and Cabo Ledo. This region holds high conservation value, serving as a habitat for seabirds, marine turtle nesting sites, and threatened species like the African manatee and the savanna elephant. It is also home to endemic species, including the rare pink-flowered Tessmannia camoneana, reflecting the area’s rich genetic diversity. Stretching along 206 km of coastline, the reserve encompasses unique geological formations, mangroves, estuaries, sandy beaches, and lagoons, which not only sustain biodiversity but also provide crucial socio-economic benefits to surrounding communities. As part of its blue economy vision, Angola aims to balance ecological integrity with sustainable development, employment, and social well-being. The Quiçama Biosphere Reserve will advance these goals, integrating conservation with research, innovation, sustainable tourism, and community-based initiatives. The recognition of both marine and freshwater ecosystems, which provide food, income, and cultural value, underscores the importance of protecting biodiversity while ensuring the long-term resilience and prosperity of local populations.
