Yarmouk Biosphere Reserve
2025UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2025, in Jordan. Nestled in the northernmost reaches of Jordan, the Yarmouk Biosphere Reserve protects a dramatic stretch of the Jordan Rift Valley where altitudes plunge from 450 metres to 150 metres below sea level. The biosphere reserve lies within the Yarmouk Basin, a landscape shaped by steep wadis, fertile terraces, and perennial streams. This topographic variety creates a mosaic of habitats that sustain high biodiversity while preserving cultural landscapes that have supported human life for centuries. Designated under the stewardship of the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature, the reserve aims to integrate conservation, sustainable development, and community participation.
