Mornington Peninsula and Western Port Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2002, in Australia. The Mornington Peninsula and Western Port Biosphere Reserve includes the whole of Mornington Peninsula Shire and parts of the City of Frankston. It also covers coastal areas of the municipalities of Casey, Cardinia and Bass Coast, including Phillip Island and French Island. Western Port, also a Ramsar site, is a coastal embayment with extensive, relatively undisturbed mudflats and saltmarsh. It is internationally important as feeding and roosting habitat for summering waders. The site periodically supports more than 10,000 waders and more than 10,000 ducks and swans, as well as a rich invertebrate fauna of some 1,380 species.
