UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2004, in Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The Mount Kuwol Biosphere Reserve, on the west coast of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and about 100 km south-east of Pyongyang, comprises a 954 m high mountain, adjacent coastal wetlands, lagoons, river estuaries and agricultural areas. Both the core area and the buffer zone form part of the Mount Kuwol Nature Reserve, designated in 1976.
