UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2005, in Mongolia. Situated in the eastern corner of Mongolia, this biosphere reserve covers a representative portion of one of the largest intact grassland ecosystems in the world. It lies on the Mongolian Plateau at an average altitude of about 800 m above sea level. Its main characteristic is rolling steppe that extends for more than 200 km along the Chinese border. The landscape is formed by gently rolling hills, with scattered mountains and sand dunes unique to the region.
