UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2009, in Indonesia. Bukit Batu is a peatland area in Sumatra that features sustainable timber production and two wildlife reserves. These reserves are home to the Sumatran tiger, elephant, tapir and sun bear. Research activities in the biosphere reserve include the monitoring of flagship species and in-depth study of peatland ecology. Initial studies indicate good potential for sustainable economic development that uses flora and fauna to support inhabitants’ economic welfare.
