Taka Bonerate-Kepulauan Selayar Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2015, in Indonesia. Taka Bonerate–Kepulauan Selayar Biosphere Reserve is located in the south of Sulawesi, in South Sulawesi Province (Selayar Islands Regency). It covers a large marine area with small islands, numerous fringing reefs and atolls. Mangrove forests act as a barrier against strong sea waves and provide shelter and spawning grounds for various fish, as well as habitat for fauna such as birds. The mangroves include 22–26 species from 14 families, including Rhizophora stylosa and Ceriops tagal. Protected and threatened animals found at the site include softshell turtles (family Trionychidae), the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the napoleon fish (Cheilinus undulatus).
