Khuvsgul Lake Biosphere Reserve
2022UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2022, in Mongolia. Khuvsgul Lake Biosphere Reserve lies in northern Mongolia and is named after Mongolia’s deepest and clearest lake, which holds the majority of Mongolia’s freshwater. The site comprises high mountain and taiga landscapes and has rich biodiversity, supporting a number of threatened species such as the Siberian ibex (Capra sibirica). The designation of the site as a biosphere reserve supports conservation of biodiversity and landscapes, sustainable development for local communities, and research and education within a long-term protected area framework.
