Mammoth Cave Area Biosphere Reserve
1990UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 1990, in United States of America. Situated in Kentucky, the Mammoth Cave Area Biosphere Reserve encompasses a karst system characterised by complex underground watercourses and a multilayered cave system with distinctive fauna and mineralisation features. It is also significant culturally, as prehistoric peoples explored the caves, extracted minerals, used them for shelter, and cultivated the surrounding surface area.
