Archipel de la Guadeloupe Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 1992, in France. Situated on Guadeloupe Island in the Caribbean Sea, this biosphere reserve comprises two geographically separate sites. Basse-Terre consists of tropical forest in the west of the island, overlooked by the active volcano La Soufrière (1,467 m). The forest, uninhabited today, is home to more than 300 species of trees and shrubs despite centuries of human impact that decimated numerous species.
