UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 1998, in Germany. Located along the French German border, the Vosges du Nord and the Pfälzerwald share three defining natural features: water, sandstone and forests. Sandstone outcrops characterise the broad forest belt, where beech, oak and pine are managed. Springs, streams and lakes are found throughout the humid valleys.
