Nerusso-Desnianskoe-Polesie Biosphere Reserve
2001UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2001, in Russian Federation. The biosphere reserve lies in the Dnieper basin within the Polesie mixed forest zone, on the border with Ukraine. It covers low-lying, sparsely populated forested landscapes on the left bank of the Desna River in the Bryansk Region. The area is regionally significant for its extensive floodplain wetlands and old-growth ash–oak forests, which support major spring migrations of waterbirds and sustain key hydrological functions. The reserve’s main aims include conserving genetic resources, ecosystems and landscapes, providing a platform for research, long-term monitoring and environmental education, and supporting sustainable development by maintaining traditional land use and developing ecotourism.
