Smolensk Lakeland Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2002, in Russian Federation. This biosphere reserve is located in the north-west of the Smolensk Region and is notable for its diversity of glacial landscapes within a relatively small territory. In addition to end moraines, long sandy ridges and glacial lowlands, there are 35 picturesque lakes of glacial origin. Other habitats include bogs, marshes and virgin coniferous and broad-leaved forests.
