UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2008, in Russian Federation. The biosphere reserve is located in the south-east of Rostov Region. The natural conditions of the territory, which lies in the valley of the Kuma–Manych depression and on the spurs of the Salo–Manych ridge, are, in general, typical of the southern European part of Russia. The reserve’s territories have long been used with varying intensity. The activities of the administration of the reserve are aimed at preserving the natural diversity of the core zone, and at the sustainable development of the buffer zone and the zone of co-operation. In the protected zone of the reserve, ecologically adapted agricultural technologies are being implemented. The area has great potential for the development of many types of tourism, and for recreation and sport fishing.
