Arrábida Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2025, in Portugal. The Arrábida Biosphere Reserve extends across the municipalities of Palmela, Sesimbra, and Setúbal, bordering the River Sado. It is distinguished by remarkable geological formations, unique flora, and diverse landscapes of ecological, cultural, and scenic value. The Reserve encompasses habitats ranging from rugged coastal cliffs to forested slopes and has a long tradition of human activity, including fishing, agriculture, livestock farming, beekeeping, wine and cheese production, and tourism. Its designation seeks to integrate ecosystem conservation with sustainable economic and cultural practices, while promoting research, education, and public awareness. By aligning natural and human systems, the Reserve reinforces local identity and contributes to the global network of Biosphere Reserves as a model of sustainable development.
