Mapimí Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 1977, in Mexico. Mapimí Biosphere Reserve sits where the states of Durango, Chihuahua and Coahuila meet in northern Mexico. The area lies in a closed basin ringed by low mountain ranges running roughly north–south, within the Bolsón de Mapimí basin. Mapimí is a representative Chihuahuan Desert landscape and a key stronghold for the endemic Bolson tortoise (Gopherus flavomarginatus) and other arid-adapted fauna.Its objectives include restoring soils and grasslands, strengthening biological monitoring and species conservation, consolidating organic beef production and regenerative ranching, developing rural tourism circuits, and sustaining research and training in biology, conservation and sustainable production.
