Baconao Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 1987, in Cuba. The Baconao Biosphere Reserve lies on Cuba’s south-eastern edge and encompasses the Sierra de la Gran Piedra, east of Santiago de Cuba. The reserve brings together terrestrial and marine ecosystems, including extensive caves and caverns that host one of Cuba’s most diverse cave faunas. The reserve’s objectives are to strengthen landscape-scale environmental management by reducing agricultural, forestry and fisheries pressures, restoring key habitats and connectivity, and controlling invasive species, while building local capacity and governance for sustainable resource use.
