UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2003, in Mexico. Located at the south-eastern tip of the State of Quintana Roo on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve covers over 144,866 ha and contains a mosaic of open water, seagrass beds, mangroves, sand beaches and coral reefs. It is the largest platform-type reef complex in Mexico and, owing to its isolated position, retains well-preserved natural ecosystems.
