Maderas del Carmen Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2006, in Mexico. The protected area includes a portion of the Sierra Madre Oriental at its northern extremity. Its elevation, configuration and geographical interconnections support a great variety of plants and animals representative of the Chihuahuense Desert and the Sierra Madre Oriental itself. Especially notable are communities typical of mesophilic forests in the area, survivors from geological periods when this part of the country was cooler and more humid, approximately 10,000 years ago.
