Agua y Paz Biosphere Reserve
2007UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2007, in Costa Rica. The Agua y Paz (Water and Peace) Biosphere Reserve lies in northern Costa Rica, largely within the Costa Rican sector of the San Juan River Basin. The landscape is defined by mountain ranges including the Miravalles, Tenorio, Arenal, Chato and Platanar volcanoes, and broad plains that host lakes, flooded forests and swamps. The reserve strengthens habitat connectivity between the Cordillera Volcánica Central Biosphere Reserve in Costa Rica, and Indio Maíz Biological Reserve in Nicaragua, complementing the San Juan–La Selva Biological Corridor. The biosphere reserve fosters a shared regional identity and strengthens integrated water-resource management and the sustainable use of natural resources.
