Trifinio Fraternidad Biosphere Reserve (El Salvador)
2011UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2011, in El Salvador. The Trifinio Fraternidad Transboundary Biosphere Reserve is a tri-national reserve spanning El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. It is the first transboundary biosphere reserve in Central America and makes a major contribution to implementing the Mesoamerican Corridor. It includes key biodiversity areas such as Montecristo National Park and a variety of forest ecosystems. A key function of this mountain area is securing water supplies for local communities. It also plays an important role in regional development through coffee production, conifer-forest extraction and agrotourism. The reserve has received strong high-level political support, including from vice-ministers of the three countries, alongside the involvement of local communities in promoting sustainable development.
