UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2017, in Honduras. The biosphere reserve lies a few kilometres from the Nicaraguan border in the department of Choluteca. It has rich biological diversity, including several endemic faunal species. The biosphere reserve contains 18 villages. Main economic activities include horticulture, fruit and coffee production, ornamental plant cultivation, livestock breeding and milk production. The area is also known for its saddlery products, including belts, harnesses and boots.
