Mont Nimba Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 1980, in Guinea. The Nimba Massif lies on the border between Guinea, Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire. The Monts Nimba chain is notable for the beauty and originality of its landscapes and for a highly contrasting range of climatic influences shaped by its geography, topography and orientation. These factors, and others, explain the successive classification of the Nimba chain as a nature reserve in 1944, a biosphere reserve in 1980, a World Heritage Site in 1981, and placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 1992. The biodiversity of the plains, hills and forests of Nimba provides local people with food, energy, water, medicinal resources, shelter, agricultural land and other essential resources. It is considered a natural reservoir that can support economic development and local well-being.
