Chimanimani Biosphere Reserve
2022UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2022, in Zimbabwe. Chimanimani Biosphere Reserve lies in the Eastern Highlands on the Zimbabwe–Mozambique border. Steep mountain relief supports a range of ecosystems from montane moist forests and grasslands to drier lowland systems. Set within the Eastern Afromontane biodiversity hotspot, Chimanimani hosts high levels of endemism and is one of the few places in Zimbabwe where small remnant patches of low- and mid-altitude moist forest persist alongside high-elevation habitats. The reserve’s principal objectives include conserving ecosystems and species, strengthening the district’s resilience to climatic shocks and stresses, and promoting sustainable socio-economic development.
