Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 1976, in Thailand. Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve lies on the north-eastern flank of the Khao Khieo Massif, on the rim of the Korat Plateau, about 240 kilometres from Bangkok. Elevation ranges from roughly 250 to 760 metres across a tilted, gently dissected plateau, with intermittent streams that retain water locally through the dry season and drain to the Mun River. The reserve is regionally important for conserving Thailand’s upland forest mosaic, including dry dipterocarp forest now much reduced across the country, and for long-running field science that informs management. Current priorities are to maintain and restore key habitats, apply research and monitoring to guide decisions, deliver tightly managed educational camps and training, and support cooperative agriculture and low-impact tourism in the transition area.
