Qomolangma Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2004, in China. The Qomolangma Biosphere Reserve extends from China’s border with Nepal in the south to the watershed between the Yaluzangbu River and southern Tibet in the north. Centred on Mount Qomolangma, rising 8,848 metres, it spans humid alpine systems, mountain forests, wetlands and semi-arid plateau grasslands shaped by both oceanic and continental glaciers. The reserve is a setting for hiking and scientific research. Objectives focus on conserving alpine, mountain forest and shrubland ecosystems and the natural habitats they support, including emblematic species such as snow leopard and Himalayan tahr.
