unesco

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2010, in Republic of Korea. The central part of Gwangneung Forest is a basin divided into east and west by the Bongseonsacheon stream at about 100 m above sea level, flowing southward. The basin is open to the north, while the other sides are enclosed by mountain peaks and ridges. Owing to this geography, winter air temperatures here are lower than in nearby areas. In the eastern part of the forest, Mount Jugyeop, the highest peak at 600 m, is linked by a gentle ridgeline to Mount Unak and the Gwangneung royal tomb at the southern end of the ridge.
