Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve
1977UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 1977, in Bulgaria. The Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve lies in central Bulgaria, extending along the Balkan Mountain Range. This range is the principal mountain system of both the Balkan Peninsula and Bulgaria, and forms an extension of the Alpine–Carpathian folds. Four major Bulgarian rivers have their sources within the reserve: the Tundzha, Vit, Osam and Stryama.
