Slovak Karst (Slovenský Kras) Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 1977, in Slovakia. Situated adjacent to the Aggtelek Biosphere Reserve in Hungary, Slovenský kras in southern Slovakia is a karst landscape that comprises almost the full range of karst phenomena found in temperate climates. A series of plateaux at 400–900 metres above sea level are surrounded by steep slopes that descend to basins, valleys and gorges. More than 700 caves are recognised in the 60,000 ha karst area, which is shared with Hungary. In 1995, the Caves of Aggtelek and Slovak Karst were designated as a World Heritage site.
