Miramare and Trieste Coast Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 1979, in Italy. The Miramare and Trieste Coast Biosphere Reserve is situated about 7 km from the city of Trieste, on the Gulf of Trieste close to the Slovenian border. It takes the form of a rocky karst promontory with coastal cliffs and beaches. Marine habitats of special conservation interest include the tidal zone, which harbours many endemic species such as the brown alga (Fucus virsoides), and undisturbed cliffs with a diverse benthic fauna. Many tourists enjoy underwater tours or visit the castle and garden of the Habsburg family. The aim of the biosphere reserve is to maintain biological diversity in the marine environment surrounding Trieste through scientific research and monitoring. Environmental education for students and the public is also a major activity.
