UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 1990, in France. Mont Ventoux, at 1,909 metres above sea level, lies between the Alpine massif to the north and the Mediterranean massifs to the south. Its varied relief creates a mosaic of microclimates and habitats. Owing to its intermediate position and slope orientation, the mountain hosts exceptional floristic and faunal richness. The summit is notably rich in flora, with about sixty rare species. The surrounding area supports a wide variety of trees, notably beech and juniper
