Lac Saint-Pierre Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2000, in Canada. The Lac Saint-Pierre Biosphere Reserve is a vast territory that has been home to many communities for generations. At its biogeographical centre lies Lake Saint-Pierre, a fluvial expansion of the St Lawrence River formed as the Champlain Sea retreated at the end of the last ice age. The lakeshore and archipelago host distinctive wetland ecosystems recognised under the Ramsar Convention. The area includes North America’s largest heronry and is one of the continent’s key stopovers for migratory birds. Human activities include commercial shipping along the waterway that crosses the lake and its archipelago, and extensive agriculture across much of the landscape. Together with the proximity of one of Quebec’s largest cities, these factors make managing the reserve, balancing people and nature, particularly challenging.
