unesco

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2011, in Lithuania. Žuvintas lies in the southern part of the Middle Lithuanian Lowlands in south-eastern Lithuania and brings together lakes, wetlands, mires, peat bogs and pine stands. The area is nationally important as Lithuania’s oldest protected site and is internationally recognised for wetlands that serve as a migratory corridor for waterbirds and a significant peatland carbon sink. Management priorities centre on restoring natural water regimes, recovering priority meadow, fen and bog habitats, and promoting environmentally friendly farming in the buffer and wider catchment.
