Martinique Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2021, in France. Martinique is an island located in the volcanic arc of the Lesser Antilles, and is globally significant as part of the Caribbean biodiversity hotspot. The island combines striking mountainous landscapes with extensive coastal and marine environments, offering an exceptional range of natural habitats and high endemism. The Martinique Biosphere Reserve’s main purpose is to conserve and restore the island’s land–sea ecosystems while sustaining cultural identity through community-led stewardship. Management priorities include sustainable production and local consumption, responsible tourism, and a shift to renewable energy and public transport, underpinned by environmental education and applied research.
