Mountain Great Bogdo Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2021, in Russian Federation. Situated between the meandering Volga to the west and the steppes of Kazakhstan to the east, the biosphere reserve forms a crossroads of landscapes and cultures. At its centre lies Lake Baskunchak, known throughout Russia for its salt production, which stands out from the surrounding scrubland. The biosphere reserve is a landmark of the Caspian Depression and contains numerous archaeological and cultural monuments that attest to its position on the Silk Road.
