UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2022, in Georgia. Named for the Alazani River and its two northern tributaries – the Tusheti Alazani and the Piriqita Alazani – the Three Alazani Rivers Biosphere Reserve lies in the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia. It runs from subnival ridges and high mountain slopes in Tusheti to lowland floodplains near Alaverdi. The site sits within the global Caucasus Biodiversity Hotspot, recognised for exceptional temperate forest diversity with high endemism. The reserve’s aim is to conserve vital linked ecosystems and the cultural landscapes they support, maintain traditions such as seasonal pastoralism and strengthen livelihoods through practical measures in farming, market development, research, monitoring and education.
