UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2023, in Germany. Situated in the transitional area between Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt in northern Germany, the Drömling Biosphere Reserve is an ecologically valuable and culturally significant landscape shaped by centuries of human intervention. Once an impenetrable marshland, it has been transformed through an extensive system of ditches and canals, earning it the name as the Land of a Thousand Ditches. Today, it stands as one of the largest peatland complexes in the region and plays a key role in the European Green Belt, a cross-border ecological corridor along the former inner-German border. Drömling serves as a living laboratory for sustainable regional development, climate resilience and ecosystem restoration.
