Lac du Bourget, between the Rhône and the Alps Biosphere Reserve
2025UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2025, in France. The Lac du Bourget Biosphere Reserve is situated between the Jura and the Alps, and contains France’s largest natural lake. At the confluence of oceanic, alpine, and Mediterranean influences, it integrates wetlands, alluvial forests, alpine meadows, and bocage farmland. Recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, the reserve protects a unique ecological and cultural landscape where biodiversity, heritage, and human activity are deeply intertwined.
