Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 1986, in Mexico. Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located on the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, it is home to vast biodiversity, especially bird and marine species, in its tropical forests, mangroves, marshes and barrier reefs. In the language of the Maya peoples, Sian Ka’an means “origin of the sky”. Tulum, a beach resort, and the world-famous Maya ruins located within the biosphere reserve limits attract large numbers of tourists each year.
