Península de Guanahacabibes Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 1987, in Cuba. Set at the western tip of Cuba, the Guanahacabibes Peninsula Biosphere Reserve lies on a low karst plain at sea level. It is bound by the Gulf of Guanahacabibes to the north, the Yucatán Channel to the west and Bahía de Corrientes and the Caribbean Sea to the south. The peninsula serves as a major migratory corridor for birds. Its reefs, among the best-conserved and most diverse in the Greater Caribbean, sit alongside shores that host nesting beaches for three threatened sea turtles. The reserve works with local communities to safeguard ecosystems and endemic species, while supporting low-impact livelihoods and fostering research, long-term monitoring and environmental education.
