UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2000, in Ecuador. The Sumaco Biosphere Reserve lies about 100 km south-east of Quito in western Napo province. There are numerous watercourses in the area, including the Suno, Coca, Pitayacu and Pusuno rivers. Sumaco Volcano (3,900 m above sea level) is a relatively isolated peak to the east of the main Andean range. The reserve spans a wide range of ecosystems, from tropical highlands–Andean páramo to the tropical Amazon plains.
