Delta del Orinoco Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, inscribed 2009, in Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of). The Delta del Orinoco Biosphere Reserve was created by Decree No. 1,633 of 5 June 1991, published in Official Gazette No. 34,812 of 3 October 1991, and encompasses 1,125,000 ha, including the protected areas, buffer and transition areas. This represents about 31 per cent of Delta Amacuro State’s total surface. The terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of the Delta del Orinoco are characterised by high biological diversity, with more than 2,000 plants and a very rich terrestrial and aquatic fauna comprising more than 151 mammal species, 464 bird species, 76 reptiles, 39 amphibians and 210 ichthyological species. Considerable numbers of terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates also inhabit this territory.
